The elegant Grande Baroque design was created in 1941 by master silversmith William S. Warren to celebrate the art of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.  The Renaissance began in Italy during the 1400’s after a long period of cultural stagnation in Western civilization that started with the collapse of the Roman empire.  During the 13th and 14th centuries, the wealthy and powerful Medici family of Florence, Italy were the chief patrons of Renaissance artists, scientists, and writers who were rediscovering the glories of the classical civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome, and applying principles from this learning to new forms of art and advancement in the sciences.  The apex of the Renaissance movement was reached when King Louis XIV assumed the throne of France.  Louis XIV then pushed Renaissance art to become more ornate and stylized, even grandiose, with the goal of using this dramatic style of architecture and art as a means of impressing visitors and expressing triumphant power and control.  The period that followed became known as the “Baroque” Period.  The word Baroque is derived from French and Portuguese words meaning a pearl that is not round, but is of elaborate or unconventional shape.  The elegant Grande Baroque pattern embodies all of the wonders of the Baroque period.
